Every Maleema bag you carry, every piece of clothing you slip into it didn't begin on a design software or inside a factory. It began with a conversation, a pair of hands, and a quiet kind of intention.
We know you've seen a hundred brands use the word sustainable. We know how hollow it can sound when it's plastered across a homepage and never spoken about again. So this isn't a marketing piece. This is us pulling back the curtain honestly, sometimes awkwardly on what it actually looks like to build a fashion brand that tries to mean what it says.
This is the journey behind our collection. And it starts long before any product does.
The fashion industry is the second largest polluter in the world. That stat used to live in our heads as something uncomfortable but distant until it didn't. Until we started looking at our own wardrobes, at the bags piling up, at the fast fashion cycles we'd been part of without ever consciously choosing to be.
Maleema was born from a very simple, very personal frustration: we wanted to buy beautiful things that we didn't feel guilty about. Pieces that felt considered, that lasted, that had a story you could trace not just a price tag and a trend cycle.
And when we looked for that, we realised there was a gap. Not for lack of sustainable brands, but for a brand that felt genuinely wearable, genuinely stylish, and genuinely connected to the people making it. So we decided to try to build that ourselves.
"We didn't want to sell products. We wanted to create things worth keeping."
Before a single collection was sketched, we spent months honestly, longer than was comfortable looking for artisans whose craft we respected deeply. Not suppliers. Artisans.
We travelled. We sat in workshops. We drank too much chai and asked a lot of questions that probably seemed strange to people used to working with brands that only cared about MOQs and delivery timelines. We asked things like: What do you enjoy making most? What do you wish brands let you do more of? What does your workday actually look like?
The artisans behind Maleema are not a footnote in our brand story they are the brand story. Their skill, their time, their knowledge passed down through generations: that is what you hold in your hands when you carry one of our bags.
Handcrafted is another word that's been stretched almost to the point of meaninglessness. So let us be specific about what it means at Maleema.
Does this mean things take longer? Yes. Does it mean our pieces cost more than fast fashion? Absolutely. But when a woman writes to tell us she's been using her Maleema bag every single day for two years and it still looks beautiful that's the return on investment we're actually chasing.
We'll be honest sourcing sustainable materials is not simple, and anyone who tells you otherwise is probably skipping a few steps. It's a constant process of researching, testing, questioning, and sometimes starting over when something doesn't meet the bar we've set.
Our fabrics are sourced from farmers that prioritise low impact processes natural dyes where possible, lower water usage, and transparency about where their raw materials come from.
Here's something the sustainable fashion conversation doesn't talk about enough: the most sustainable thing you can do is buy less and keep it longer. We design our pieces with that in mind. Classic silhouettes that don't date. Hardware that's built to last decades. Fabrics that soften and improve with wear, not ones that pill and fade after six months.
We want you to be reaching for your Maleema bag in ten years. We design as if that's the plan.
"The most sustainable garment is the one already in your wardrobe. The second most sustainable is the one made to stay there for years."
We think about you our customer a lot. Not in an abstract demographic sort of way, but in a real sense. You've spent years figuring out your style, and now you know what you like. You're not chasing trends. You're building a wardrobe that works for your actual life meetings, weekends, travel, the school run, dinner with people you love.
We built Maleema for you. Not as a concept. As a real woman whose time, money, and wardrobe we deeply respect.
Every collection we release is a conversation between our design instincts, our artisans' expertise, and the feedback we get from women who are wearing our pieces in the real world. We don't work in isolation, and we don't think we should.
Thank you for being here. For caring enough to read this far. For every time you've chosen something slower, something considered, something made to last whether that's been with us or not.
That choice matters. It adds up. And we're proud to be part of it.
With love, the Maleema team
